'Battleship' Capsizes With $25.3 Mil Launch, Universal Faces Big Loss
Universal and Hasbro Entertainment's
big-budget Battleship barely left port in its North American launch, grossing a
dismal $25.3 million.
That's well below the anticipated $35 million to $40 million that Universal and director Peter Berg were hoping for. Battleship, designed to put the studio squarely in the tentpole game, cost at least $209 million to produce, excluding a pricey marketing spend.
Battleship's international gross of $226.8 million provides some cushion, but it needed a strong domestic performance to end up in the black. A $25.3 million opening means the movie might not clear $70 million or $80 million over the long haul domestically, resulting in a notable loss for Universal and sparking plenty of Monday-morning quarterbacking within the studio about what went wrong.
There's already speculation that Battleship, starring Taylor Kitsch, Rihanna, Brooklyn Decker and Liam Neeson, will follow the same course as Disney's John Carter, which debuted to $30.2 million in March and topped out at $71.8 million domestically. Overseas, John Carter, also starring Kitsch, earned $200.6 million. The pic resulted in a $200 million write-down for Disney.

Despite her recent heath scare, Rihanna sounded fabulous as she sang hits like “Only Girl (In the World), "Run This Town" and "Live Your Life."

Pastel Hair Still Going Strong at Chanel
Just when we thought the pink (or blue or
green) hair trend might be dying down—the look first started gaining traction
over two years ago after Proenza Schouler's Spring 2010 show, after all—Lady
Gaga debuted pastel-streaked hair last week. Then, today in Versailles,
hairstylist Sam McKnight sent the Chanel Cruise 2013 models out onto the runway
in pastel-colored pageboy crops, solidifying the fact that the trend still has
legs.
Although it's not visibly apparent from the front, McKnight actually created what he called a "bob-top": "wigs dyed grey pastel then sliced in half to reveal low pony with massive bow," he explained on Twitter, to go with the show’s punk Marie Antoinette theme. Makeup artist Peter Phillips painted tiny interlocking-C logos on the models' faces, meanwhile, a tribute to Marie Antoinette’s signature beauty mark.

Rihanna's Mother's Day Love
Observing the holiday that gives thanks
to the women who raised us, Rihanna treated her mom, Monica Braithwaite, to a
delectable Mother's Day dinner on the town in New York City on Sunday evening
(May 13).
Fresh off of a trip to the tattoo parlor, the 24-year-old donned a navy and white tummy-revealing ensemble while picking up a pretty bouquet of pink flowers to dote unto her mother during the course of their time together.
Earlier in the day, Rihanna was her usual busy self on Twitter while sending out a string of well-wishing messages to the moms, single dads and those who are without their moms.
Shooting out the more general words to follow, RiRi exclaimed, "Happy mother's day to all superwomen out thurr! Every day is your day. And a happy mother's day to all the dads doin it .
She then capped of the warm sentiments with, "Sending out special love to those who lost their mothers!
Meanwhile, Rihanna previously spoke with ELLE about her retired accountant mom's reliable nature, saying, “I still don’t know how she did it. She always protected us—she would never let us know when we had problems, even financially. I still got to go and get a perm every four weeks."

Rihanna Poses Topless in New Music Video
Rihanna shared sexy never-before-seen
snapshots of herself getting ready for her animalistic music video, "Where Have
You Been," on Facebook this weekend. RiRi's obviously not shy about showing off
her hot bod! Plus, on Sunday Kim Kardashian tweeted an edgy pic from her Vogue
Italia shoot, and Kylie and Kendall Jenner sported some rather controversial
accessories on the red carpet Saturday night.
